How to Pick a Lock
Have you ever been locked out of your home or a room in your home? Rather than breaking down the door or ripping apart the doorknob, you can try picking the lock. Here are some easy to follow steps on picking the lock.
Step One: You may want to keep on hand a pick or a tension wrench. You can find these at your local hardware store.
Step Two: Place the wrench into the bottom part of the keyhole in the door. If there is no debris then the wrench or pick should slide in very easily.
Step Three: Turn the tool in the direction that you would normally turn the key to unlock the door.
Step Four: At the same time, place the pick at the top part of the keyhole. You can start to feel with the pick the individual lock pins. There should be about 4 or 5 lock pins.
Step Six: Now apply some pressure to the hardest pin. You will notice this because it will hard to push that particular pin up. Keep applying pressure until the pin clicks.
Step Seven: Now, you have to do this same process with each pin in the lock. It is very important to keep putting on the pressure on the tension wrench as you click the pins with the pick.
Step Eight: After each pin has clicked, you will turn the tension wrench and the lock will pop open.
You may not be able to do this on the first shot. If lock picking were easy then everyone would do it. You can practice at home because you never know when this new skill will come in handy. Try practicing on a backdoor where no one will call the police because you are trying to pick a lock.
You can also practice on a spare doorknob. Buy a cheap lock at the local hardware and practice using your new tools. Make sure that the tools you buy are durable. The last thing you want is to break the tools in the lock.
This skill will help you in the long run. If you do happen to get locked out and don’t have a spare. Try looking for an open window and if all else fails then pull out your lock picking tools and get to work. It will save you money on a locksmith.
