How to Paint a Car
Most people would rather have their cars painted by a professional. But through carefully carrying out a set of procedures, you can accomplish this task on your own and save money in the process.
Here are the things you need to paint your car:
- Dust mask
- Goggles
- Protective covering
- Paint sprayer
- Sandpaper
- Primer
- Car paint
- Wax
- Car washing detergent
- Masking tape
- Tarp
After gathering these things, thoroughly wash your car. Use soap and water to remove as much dust and grime as you can. After washing it with soap and water, use wax to remove dirt which the first washing was not able to clean. Remember that the paint will adhere properly on the car if its surface is clean.
Sanding down the car is the next step. But before you do this, check if your car has small holes. If it does, use putty to fill in the holes. You can then start sanding. For spots requiring only a little smoothing, you can use fine grit sandpaper. For areas requiring much sanding, use loose grit sandpaper. Sand down your car until its surface is level.
Next, you need to make preparatory procedures before painting your car. Let the car dry completely. You may need to give it a couple of hours to dry. Then take a wire from the chassis frame and ground it to anything grounded near the car. This will prevent dust and other particles from getting on the car’s surface. Then, you need to cover the parts of the car you do not want to paint. These include windows, mirrors, and chrome. Place a tarp on the vehicle and secure it with masking tape.
Applying the primer is the next step. The primer makes the paint adhere more properly to the car. Ensure that the primer is evenly applied on the car. Also, see to it that you have much ventilation if you are priming and painting your automobile indoors. You should have your protective gear on while doing this step.
Let the primer dry. Applying primer usually leaves mounds of the said chemical on the surface of the car. Next, sand down the car again. So you need to remove the said mounds by sanding it down.
You are now ready to paint your car. Use a paint sprayer to apply the layers of paint on your car. Normally, you would want to apply two to three coats of paint. After spraying the first coat, let the car dry for 15 to 20 minutes. Then you can spray the next coat of paint. Let the car dry for 90 minutes after spraying the last coat.
When the paint is dry, you can start applying clear coat on the car. Vehicles usually require three layers of clear coat. After applying each clear coat, let the car dry for around 15 minutes. When you have applied the final clear coat, let the car dry for one and a half hours.
