How To Make a Cake

The majority of people use prepackaged cake mix when they want to make a cake.  It would make a nice change of pace to make a cake from scratch. Here is a basic recipe for Yellow Cake.

If you follow these steps and instructions you can make the perfect homemade cake. The first thing you need is to get together all of your ingredients. You will need, 2-1/2 cups of all purpose flour, 2-1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 2/3 cup of butter, 2 eggs, 1-1/4 cup of milk, ½ teaspoon of salt, 1-3/4 cups of granulated sugar and 1-1/2 tsp of vanilla.

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. By preheating your own before you start you can have the oven all nice and hot and ready to go when you are ready.

Take two 8” round cake pans. Grease the pans with margarine or cooking spray. Then coat the pans with a dusting of flour; this will actually help the cake slide out of the pans easy when the cake is done.

In a bowl combine the flour, the baking powder and salt in a bowl and beat for a minute or two until the ingredients are combined.

Beat the butter, which should be softened not melted with the mixer for about 30 seconds in a large bowl.

Next add your vanilla to the butter and beat well with the mixer for about a minute. Taking one egg at a time beat in each egg for about 30 seconds each time. Then add in the flour mixture.

Pour the batter evenly into each pan, it may seem impossible so you can use a liquid measuring cup to help you divide the batter. Then gently tap the pans against a flat surface, this will help get out any air bubbles that the batter may have and it also helps distribute the batter evenly throughout the pan.

Place the pans on the oven rack for about 30 to 35 minutes; some ovens may bake faster so keep an eye on the cake. After about a half an hour, check the cake by using a toothpick. Take a clean toothpick and insert it into the middle of the cake. If the toothpick comes back clean then the cake is done, if any batter comes on the pick then the cake should go back for a few minutes.

After the cake is done, place the pans on wire racks. Cool the cakes and then remove the cake from the pans, they should easily slide out if you used enough margarine, cooking spray and flour. Now you are ready for frosting!
