How to Make a Bow and Arrow
Creating a bow and arrow is a very good skill for hunting or for making crafts. Also, learning this skill can help you defend yourself or hunt for animals if you get lost in the woods. Here are the steps in building a bow and arrow.
First, you need to work on the bow. Find a suitable piece of wood. The wood must be dry and dead, but it must not be cracking and gray. The best types of wood for a bow include oak, hickory, and teak.
After finding a suitable piece of wood, determine its natural curve. Observe the grains of the wood and see their directions along the surface of the wood.
Shaping the wood is the next step. Take a knife and shave off small pieces of wood inside the curve. The curve refers to the side that faces behind you while you are shooting the bow. Do this on the wood’s thicker half until it has the same pull and width as the thinner portion. The center of the bow should be thick and strong.
Creating the notches is the next step. The notches will hold the bow string. Using your knife, cut notches an inch from the ends of the bow.
Then, you need to select your bow string. This can be made of nylon rope, cotton strands, or hemp cord. If you are in the wilderness, you can use vines or rawhide.
Remember to choose a string that has enough strength. The power of the bow does not come from the wood but from the string. Attach the string to the notches on the bow. Make sure the string is tied firmly.
You can now start working on your arrows. Find the straightest sticks available. The wood has to be dry and dead. Cut the stick so that it is half as long as your bow. Create a small notch at the rear end of the arrow. This notch will accommodate the bow string.
Making the arrowheads is the next step. You can use a piece of metal you have shaped to an arrowhead and sharpened at the tip. Attach the arrowhead firmly so that it does not fall off when you shoot the arrow. If metal is not available, you can simply sharpen the tip of your arrow. The last step is attaching the fletching to your arrows. Use a set of small feathers for your fletching. Glue them at the arrow’s rear end.
