How to Install a Toilet

With the economy unsteady as it is more and more homeowners are doing their own home improvements repairs. Sometimes you cannot just ignore a problem because it won’t fix itself. Bathroom repairs are most common; here is a step-by-step guide on how to install a toilet.

Step One: Remove the old toilet from the flanges, then take the new toilet an turn it upside down. Next, install your wax ring and sleeve on the bottom. Make sure that the ring and sleeve are securely fitted to the bottom.

Step Two: You want to make sure that the toilet flange is clean and that the toilet floor bolts are positioned in the upward position. Place the new toilet over the open drain hole. Make sure you get as accurate as possible.

Step Three: Firmly press down on the toilet; this will help condense the wax ring to the toilet and the floor. Then secure all washers and hardware to the floor bolts and make sure they are 100% fastened to the floor. But be careful not to over tighten the bolts or the base of the toilet could crack.

Step Four: Turn the tank upside down and accurately place the washer on the back part of the flush valve. Turn the tank right side right and make sure that the tank is centered.

Step Five: Line up the holes on the bottom of the tank and the top of the tank. These must be accurate for proper operation. Once you have successfully lined up the holes, install the rubber washers on both sides of the bolt heads located on the side of the tank.

Step Six: Next, look underneath the bowl itself and fasten the remaining washers and nuts to the bolts. For maximum tightness, use a ratchet wrench or a basin wrench. Remember do not over tighten the hardware on the toilet.

Step Seven: You want to take a piece of tubing that will fit perfectly in the middle of the shutoff valve and the tank of the toilet. The tubing should be secured first to the valve and then to the tailpiece. Tighten up all hardware and open the valve and fill the tank.

Step Eight: All that is left is to secure the toilet seat and you are ready to go! Toilet Seats are generally not included when you buy a toilet, so you will have to choose one that suits your needs.
