A DVD or Digital Versatile Disc is a popular optical disc storage media device capable of storing large amounts of information. It is used in storing data in various multimedia formats such as audio and video. Many movies today are available in DVDs because of its excellent picture and sound qualities.

Although DVDs do not require frequent cleaning, keeping it clean of fingerprints and scratches helps to increase its lifespan. Here are a few easy do-it-yourself remedies for cleaning DVDs.

Materials Needed:

• Flannel or microfiber cloth
• Mild liquid soap
• Toothpaste

Lifting Off Dust

1. Hold the DVD by the outer edges or by inserting your finger through the hub.
2. Gently wipe the shiny reflective surface with a lint-free cloth. Do not use paper-based products or towels as these can scratch the DVD.
3. Do not wipe in a circular direction. Start from the hub and move to the edge of the disc in one straight motion.
4. Rotate the disc and continue wiping in this manner until the entire surface had been wiped.

Getting Rid of Smudges or Stains

1. Hold the DVD by the edges or stick a finger through its center.
2. Squeeze a few drops of dish washing liquid on the reflective surface.
3. Run some lukewarm water over it and gently rub the soap on the disc with back and forth motions.
4. Insert a finger through the hub and gently flick the disc to shake any excess water off. Wipe off any remaining drops with a lint-free cloth.

Repairing Scratches

1. There are various DVD cleaners available in the market that you can use to repair and fill scratches.
2. Certain scratches can be removed by polishing with homemade remedies, such as Brasso Metal Polish or toothpaste.
3. Always use a radial direction when cleaning or polishing DVDs. Wipe the polish or the toothpaste with a clean lint-free cloth.

Proper Care and Handling of DVDs

1. Make sure that your hands are dry and clean before handling any discs.
2. Keep DVDs in a protective cover when not in use to keep it from gathering dust.
3. Avoid bending or carelessly handling the discs when placing them in the DVD player or back into its protective case.
4. Keep the discs away from direct sources of heat, including sunlight, radiators, and other hot surfaces.
5. Do not use any organic or harsh solvents like acetone or benzene when cleaning DVDs. These solutions can dissolve the polycarbonate material on the discs.
