How to Build an Igloo

The first step in building an igloo is finding a suitable location. Choose a spot where the snow is level.

When you have chosen a location for your igloo, you can work on creating block molds. These will make the blocks of the igloo evenly sized. Take four boards and make a rectangular box out of them. The box does not need a top and bottom. Use a set of nails to hold the box in place. You need two sets of block molds. One should have a height of 6 inches, a width of 5 inches, and a length of 12 inches. The second block mold should have a height of 5 inches, a width of 4 inches, and a length of 10 inches. Create around 5 or 6 of the two types of block molds.

Return to the spot you have chosen and make a flat space on it. Create a circle on the space. Try to make the circle as perfect as possible.

Now you need to mold snow using your block molds. Place snow in the molds and ram in the snow as much as you can. If the snow is too dry, sprinkle a very small amount of water on it. This will make it easier to pack it in the molds. Hold the mold up and tap its sides sharply to let the snow block out. If you have companions in this project, you can ask them to do the same..

Once you have made a good number of snow blocks, you can now stack them up. Create a row of the larger blocks around the circle. Ensure the joints are even and smooth. If you find large cracks in the joints, you can place loose snow on them. Place another layer of blocks above the first one. Put each block on top of the joint created by the first layer of blocks.

Continue stacking the snow blocks up. Each new layer should be slanted toward the center. This will make the walls curve inward. Once you are done stacking, cap the hole on top of the igloo with a snow block. Finally, create an entrance to your igloo by carefully carving out a tunnel out of the structure.
