How to Build an Awning

An awning is a protective shed that can shelter you from the sun or rain. The most basic type is the shade awning, thatwhich simply screens you from the sun. A shade awning is usually found on patios where it can be rolled on when the sun is hot, and can be rolled -ouawayt when it cools down.

Here are instructions for building a shade awning:

First, you have to decide where you will build the awning. It can be on your deck, patio or terrace. Make the accurate measurements of the opening where you will build your awning on. Buy a slightly larger piece of shade cloth. After that, drill holes in the top part of the awning-on area, . This is where you will attach the cable.

After that, place in the screw eyes on the drilled holes. This is where your awning “starts” when you roll it out. Tighten the holes withusing your hand and use screwdrivers afterwards for added security. For added security, use screwdrivers afterwards for tightening. Now this is the crucial part:. Locate the exact screwing points on the opposite wall/fence. This is where your awning will “end”.

To do this accurately, tie a string in the screw eyes and “follow” the string until you reach the other wall/fence. You should create a straight line with the string. Mark these accurate parallel areas and drill clearance holes for eyebolts. They look like screw eyes but they pass through the fence to the back where they at are secured by a washer and nut. I at the back of the fence. Install turnbuckles at one side.

Now, fix the cables which will “guide” the shade cloth when you want it to roll on. For durability, use a weather and rust resistant cable. Install the cable on the screw eyes and run them across the room.

After that, fix the shade cloth. Sew a hem using running stitch to at the rough edges of the shade cloth using a running stitch. To hang the cloth to the cables, make holes which are reinforced using a grommet kit (it comes with the awning-building kit) at the sewed sides of the shade cloth AND at its center. At these reinforced holes, iInsert regular key rings at these reinforced holes. Run the cable (the one which connects the fences) through the key rings. Secure the turnbuckles.

Your awning is now ready to be used. Just use the center reinforced hole forto the pulling down mechanism of your awning.
