How to Build a Wooden Fence
Building a wooden fence is easy. Below are the steps you need to take in this project.
First, prepare the following tools and materials:
- Hammer
- String
- Tape measure
- Drill with bits
- Posthole digger
- Wheelbarrow
- Nails
- Screws
- Hinges
- Vertical sections
- 2 x 4” stock
- In- ground post stock
After preparing the materials, accurately mark your lot. One of the things you need to avoid is to start a conflict with your neighbors because you occupied a portion of their land with your fence. Set the mark around 1 foot on the side of your property’s line.
Then you can lay out the corner posts of your fence. Use the corner marks you have made in identifying the exact spot where you will dig holes for the posts. While digging, remember to make the holes around 4 feet deep. If you live in a frosty area, you should dig past the frost line. Install the posts on the holes. Refill the holes in 6” lifts. Ensure the posts are firmly installed on the ground and they do not wobble. Constantly check each post if it is level and upright.
Next, tie a long piece of string between the posts. Use the string in determining the height of the walls you would set up. The string should be level at each side. Measure the distance between the middle posts and set them up.
Attaching the walls is the next step. Drill a hole into the posts where you would install the fence members. Secure the top and bottom portion of the walls using nails and/or screws. Start with one corner and work your way around the fence.
The last step involves attaching the vertical sections. Use a jig to create spacing between the vertical styles. Nail the styles to the horizontal beams.
