How to Build a Windmill
Building a windmill can be a somewhat challenging but rewarding task. This structure enables you to harness energy from the wind and convert it into mechanical energy that you can use for various purposes. If you are interested in creating your own windmill, below are the steps you need to take for this project.
Steps to Build a Windmill
- Purchase a windmill plan. This document contains the specifications and procedures included in making your own windmill. You can buy this plan from shops specializing in renewable energy devices. The Internet is also a good source for windmill plans.
- Build the components of the windmill. Start with the blades. The blades of the windmill capture the winds energy. You can make windmill blades from lightweight plastic. High-quality wood is another good material for windmill blades. Normally, you should base the size of the blades on the height of your windmill. A windmill that is six feet tall should have blades that are three or four feet long.
- Work on the windmill base. This component should be the heaviest part of the windmill. Use concrete in building your windmill base. For a six-foot high windmill, a base with 25 pounds of weight and around 22 inches square is enough.
- Build the windmill tower. For this component, you can use a 2 x 4 PVC pipe. The height of your tower will depend on the overall height of the windmill. Always consult your plan while working on this component. Next, you need to build the windmill nacelle. This component contains a shaft connecting the blades to the tower; thus, allowing it to rotate.
- Start assembling the components. Remember to have your plan at hand in this final procedure.
