How to Build a Volcano

Building your own volcano is a fun way to learn about one of nature’s most awesome wonders. Here are the things you need for this project:

For the volcano

  • 6 cups flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups salt
  • 4-5 tablespoons cooking oil

For construction of the volcano

  • soda bottle
  • baking dish

For the lava

  • baking soda
  • warm water
  • red food coloring
  • vinegar
  • dishwashing detergent

Making the dough for your mountain is the first step. Mix together the flour, salt, cooking oil, and water. Stir the mixture until it is smooth but firm. Add more flour if the mixture is runny.

Next, you need to sculpt the volcano. With this step, you will give the volcano its recognizable shape. Place the soda bottle upright on the dish. Add the dough to the exterior of the bottle and sculpt the dough to form a mountain. Create details to make the mountain as realistic as possible. If you want, you can make small crevices at the top and small paths where the lava can flow. Remember not to cover the top of the bottle and avoid getting dough in the bottle.

Next, you need to heat enough water to fill more than half of the bottle. The water only needs to be warm. Pour the water in the bottle. Add the red food coloring. Do these steps quickly.

Now it is time to create a volcanic eruption. Add six drops of detergent to the mixture in the bottle. This will create foam resembling steam from the volcano. Add two tablespoons of baking soda in the bottle. The more baking soda you add, the more massive the eruption would be. Finally, you can add the vinegar and wait for the eruption.
