How to Build a Trailer
A trailer is convenient for those who love to travel. It is also very easy to build one.
- Prepare the main frame pieces. The size and number of pieces for your main frame would differ depending on the style of the trailer you want. Measure the main frame pieces and cut them up using a high-quality saw.
- Weld them together. Ideally, you can borrow a welder. If you do not know how to weld, you can ask someone to weld the pieces for you. Make sure that the pieces are flat and are having the right shape before welding them.
- Position the axle. The position of the axle depends on the type of trailer you are building. Place the axle in a manner where it is toward the gravity center.
- Calculate the tongue weight. Use around five percent of the weight of the trailer as its tongue weight. This ensures that your trailer can indeed support the goods you will put in it.
- Center the axle with the frame. Check that the axle is in line with the frames center line.
- Mount the tongue. Turn the frame upside down and mount the tongue on a cross bar. The tongue should be ahead of the trailers axle. Next, attach the latch on the trailer. The latch prevents the structure from tilting.
- Attach fenders to your trailer. You can use small metal rods for this purpose. Fenders serve as your trailers mounting points.
- After attaching the fenders, you should then set up the vertical pieces for the trailers back. You can weld together two pieces of angle iron for this part.
