How to Build a Sandbox

Building a sandbox will let you provide a good area for your kids to play and have fun. This project is easy and quite inexpensive.

Required Materials

  • weed fabric
  • 12-inch wide, 1 inch thick boards
  • river sand
  • screw

Instructions

  1. Choosing a Location – Determine an exact spot for your sandbox. Choose a place having a bit of sunlight during the day. If you plan to put the sandbox under a tree, make sure the tree will not drop branches and dirt on the sandbox. Also, choose a location that is visible to you, whether you are outside or inside your house.
  2. Constructing the Layout – Using a set of stakes and twine, form the shape of the sandbox. Afterwards, dig the space for the sandbox. Generally, its a good idea to dig a 1-foot deep space for a sandbox. This will be enough to keep the walls upright. Next, make the space as level as possible. Then cover the entire space with weed fabric.
  3. Assembling the Sandbox – Begin with the boards for the two side walls. You should use 12- inch wide, 1- inch thick boards. Using the layout as your guide, make a 90-degree angle with the two first boards. Screw the two boards together. Do the same to the other side walls and screw the two sides together. Check if the walls form a square shape by measuring from one corner to another, in both directions.
  4. Adding the Sand – Remember to use river sand as this is cleaner than other types of sand. Pour the sand until it reaches a few inches below the top edge of the box.
