Instructions
- Prepare your tools and materials.
- When your tools and materials are ready, you need to install the roofing felt. Tarpaper is a common example of roofing felt. This serves as a waterproof barrier between the roofing and the sheathing. Quickly apply the roofing felt to a dry and clean surface. Remember to let the layers overlap when applying the felt and keep the applied felt as smooth as possible.
- Framing is the next step. Take the roof truss and rest it on the set of metal rafter ties. Position the other end of the truss on the other wall. Slowly slide the truss into place. Attach the truss with nails to keep it secure. Nail down the rafter tie in place as well.
- Create the layout. Starting with one end, measure every 16†and mark each point. This may not be the legal size and spacing, however, so you need to check your local building code.
- Sheathe the roof. Start applying the sheets at the roof’s bottom edge, and work your way to the ridge. Stagger each joint of sheathing. Use metal clips to secure each joint of sheathing. Saw off the excess overhang.
- You can now install the shingles. The most common roofing used is composed of fiberglass shingles. Install the first course of shingles directly on the starter course you have previously worked on. Use four nails to secure each course of shingle. Then, install the ridge shingles. Use cement to cover exposed nails.
