How to Build a Rabbit Hutch
Whether you are getting a rabbit for a pet or to be raised and sold in the market, your rabbit will need a rabbit hutch to accommodate it. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to build a basic 30 x 36 woven wire hutch. This size provides more than enough space for one rabbit. You may modify the dimensions to accommodate more. Ideally, a hutch should be four times the size of the rabbit.
Materials Needed
- 16-gauge hardware cloth (floor)
- 30 x 36 piece of 1 x 1 14-gauge woven wire (top)
- 18 x 132 piece of 1 x 1 14-gauge woven wire (sides, back and front)
- 14 x15 piece of 1 x 1 14-gauge woven wire (front door)
- 4 x10 piece of 1 x 1 14-gauge woven wire (feeder opening)
- Tin snips
- Wire cutters
- 3/8- inch hog rings
- Hog ring pliers
- Ready-made pliers
- Cardboard box (big enough for your rabbit)
- Straw
- 30 x 36 piece of Formica
- 15 x 15 carpet
- Litter box
- Organic litter
- Water bottle
- Food bowl
Procedure
- Build the sides of the hutch by bending the 18 x 132 woven wire at a right angle in three places. Do this by measuring 36 inches across the wire and fold. From that fold, measure another 36 inches and fold. Repeat for the third time. The remainder should measure 30 inches.
- Attach a hog ring to the edge of the 30- inch side. Fasten this ring to the edge of the 36- inch side. Set hog rings at 5- inch intervals to secure the sides. Do the same to secure the floor and the top.
- To cut out the door, measure about 2 inches from any side of the 36- inch side. Measure the same from the bottom and the top. Then, cut out a 13-inch wide and 12- inch tall hole with a wire cutter. Attach the 14 x 15 woven wire to the hole with hog rings. Leave a 1-inch overlap on all four sides.
- Cut a 2 x 8 feeder door the same way as the door. Attach the 4 x 10 woven wire with hog rings as the covering.
- Fix the door latch.
- Scatter ample fresh straw on the floor of the hutch and place the rug on the floor. Put the litter box with organic litter in the hutch. Attach the water bottle to the side and place the food bowl in the hatch beside the water bottle nozzle.
