How to Build a Pergola
A pergola is a unique structure that can enhance your backyard. This is a four-legged post with a cross beam roof. Pergolas are usually made of cedar, a type of wood that is resistant to rotting.
Steps to Build a Pergola
- Select an appropriate location for it.
- Mark the positions for the posts and the places where you will install the screws.
- Set up the posts. For this process, you may need to have a friend to assist you. Hold each post in place. Next, drive one or two nails through the anchors to the wood. Make sure the nails are set firmly onto the posts.
- Make the support beams. Take four pieces of 2 x 6 cedar beams and cut them to the desired length. You can use a template to determine the curves at each end. Then cut the curves using a jigsaw.
- Clamp the beams to the desired position. This depends on the style of your pergola. Ensure that the posts are all plumb and the beams are level. Use four 3-inch screws to secure each end of the structure.
- Cut the post and trim the excess according to your desired width and length. Secure the post using galvanized nails.
- Add the final parts. For the pergolas braces, you can use 2 x 6 stocks. Make sure it fits the top slats. An ideal measurement for this would be 5 pieces of 2 x 4.
- Secure the pergolas caps using a set of nails.
