How to Build a Go-Cart

Building a go-cart is not as difficult as it seems. Even a beginner can built one, if you follow these simple steps.

  1. Plan how your go-cart will look like. It helps if you have a concrete idea of the design of your go-cart. Visualize how you want it to look like and put it down on paper. Decide the measurements for each part. You can also take a look at the go-cart plans being sold in local hobby stores, or you can just buy one yourself.
  2. Make sure you have all the materials you need for this project. They will vary, depending on the design you want to have. Generally, though, the materials you will need are the following:
    • Square tubing
    • Round still barstock
    • Pieces of metal and wood for the frame
    • Building tools
  3. The first step in building your go-cart is to cut the steel tubing according to your design. Make sure you never deviate from your design to make it faster and easier for you.
  4. Get someone to help you as you weld the pieces together. Or you can even do it yourself. Remember to use a gusset for each corner to make the welds much stronger.
  5. Use steel rods to assemble the steering linkage and the carts axles. Remember to do this step slowly and surely because steering is very important. Use cotter pins and washers to keep the linkage intact.
  6. After assembling the linkage, you are now ready to mount the axle onto the bushings and install the drive pulley into the axle.
  7. Build the engine and drive belt. Use the remaining steel rod in creating your rear axle. Attach two bushings to the frame of the cart.
  8. Weld a steel plate on the frames rear before placing the engine on the plate. Connect your throttle cable with the hand throttle. Finally, you can work on the seat and floorboards.
  9. Paint the go cart when it is fully assembled.
