How to Build a Gate

The gate of your home serves an important purpose. It is the first structure that protects you and your property. It also gives identity to your home. It can be customized to suit your style and preference.

Required Materials

  • galvanized nails
  • face boards
  • hinges
  • handles
  • latch

Instructions

  1. Examining the Entrance Area – This is where your gate will most likely be installed. This location will also determine the height and width of your gate.
  2. Choosing the Material – Metal and wood are the two most common materials used in building gates. Metal is generally sturdier and easier to install. Wood, on the other hand, is softer but its more visually appealing than other materials. It is important to consider wet climate and termites if you decide to use wood. You may want to get the wood treated.
  3. Planning the Layout – Decide whether you want a single door or a double door gate. You also have to keep in mind two important measurements: the distance between the gate and the ground, as well as the distance between the gate and the post. If, for instance, the gate is two inches above the ground and the post is six feet tall, the gate should be two inches shorter than its posts.
  4. Working on the Frame – Create the frame for the gate out of the material you selected. Place a cross piece in the middle. This will enhance the gates stiffness. Secure the frame with galvanized nails.
  5. Attaching the Face Boards – Nail the boards evenly on the frame. This will make the gate look even and it will allow wind to pass through the gate, minimizing stress.
  6. Attaching the Hinges, Handles and Latch – Place the hinges on the top, middle and bottom sections of the gate. Use the cross piece as a reference point. After which, you can install the handles and the latch.
  7. Installing to the Posts Check the direction which you want the gate to swing to before attaching it to the posts.
