How to Build a Garage

Building a garage is very easy. Before anything else, you need to prepare the materials you would need.

Required Materials

  • cement
  • plywood
  • lumber
  • windows
  • doors
  • walls
  • nails

Instructions

  1. Planning – Determine where the garage will be located and what its measurements will be. You also have to know the legal requirements in building this part of your property. You need to find a companion or group of friends to help you with this project.
  2. Laying the Foundation – Set the wooden form for the garage on the location you have chosen. You can either construct this wooden form using garage plans available in do-it-yourself shops or create one yourself.
  3. Mixing the Concrete – Ask the store where you bought the concrete for specific instructions on how to properly mix the concrete to make it sturdy. Pour the concrete on the wooden form. It is advisable to have a companion to assist you in this step. Make sure that the concrete is square and level. Wait for the concrete to solidify.
  4. Working on the Walls – Cut the wood according to the appropriate dimensions. Always have your plan as you do this step. Verify the distance between supporting studs by consulting your local residential zoning committee. Normally, supporting studs should be 16 or 24 apart.
  5. Positioning the Walls – Again, you need the help of another person with this procedure. The walls should be set up properly. Use a level to confirm that each part is straight. Only then can you secure them with nails.
  6. Working on the Roof – To simplify this task, you can purchase pre-built trusses for your roofing. You can get this product from your local hardware store. Install the supporting joints and boards. Carefully secure the roof with screws and nails.
  7. Installing the Sheathing – The sheathing is the protective covering which consists of a layer of boards. Set up the sheathing on the studs and joists of the garage. Sheathing strengthens the structure and provides a weather-proof exterior.
  8. Installing the Windows and Doors – Make sure you install the right size and number of windows to provide much needed ventilation. The doors should be aligned to prevent jamming when they are opened.
