How to Build a Brick Wall
Putting up a brick wall is not just simply piling one brick on top of another. It requires some know-how on the basics of bricklaying. The right materials are needed to make a brick wall that would stand and endure for years.
Below is a beginner’s step-by-step guide on how to build a brick wall.
Materials Needed
- Cement
- Bricks (standard bricks measure 8.5 inches x 0.5 inch x 4.5 inches)
- Measuring tape
- Line
- Level
- Shovel
- Trowel
Steps in Building a Brick Wall
- Choose an area clear of any obstacles that may intrude with the construction.
- Create a concrete footing on which the wall will stand. The concrete footing ensures that the wall is vertically aligned.
- Once the concrete flooring has dried, mark its length to make sure that the wall will be perfectly aligned. Mark the area on which the wall will be built with a chalk line.
- Wet the bricks before laying them. This will prevent the bricks from drawing any water from the concrete flooring.
- Begin building the brick wall by starting from the corner of the concrete flooring.
- Lay down the base by putting down the first layer of bricks on the concrete flooring, starting from the left side going to the right.
- Fix the bricks together by spreading cement under them. Place a good amount of cement to provide these bricks firm grounding. Place the bricks one after the other. Make sure that there are no gaps in between.
- Build up the wall by adding successive layers of bricks on the base. Make sure that there is no significant amount of space between the bricks. Gaps and uneven spacing can compromise the strength of the wall.
- Check that each layer of bricks is perfectly aligned with the others by placing a cord from one end of the brick layer to the other. The cord should stretch vertically from one end to the other.
- Follow the above procedure when putting down each layer of bricks.
- Let the cement dry.
