How to Build a Brick Grill

Having a brick grill in your backyard can definitely add much enjoyment to your evenings as you and your family share a meal together. Building a brick grill is relatively simple.

Required Materials

  • cement
  • bricks
  • building sand
  • metal pin
  • grill

Instructions

  1. Setting the Foundation – Choose a specific area far from trees and other things that may catch fire. Once you have chosen a spot, start digging the top soil. Ideally the foundation should be 4 to 6 deep.
  2. Mixing the Cement – Mix the cement and pour it on the hole. You should give the cement a 1/8 pitch. This will allow rain water to drain away properly from the bricks. Put rebar on the cement to prevent heaving during extremely cold weather. Let the cement dry for two days.
  3. Choosing the Appropriate Bricks – While waiting for the cement to dry, start choosing the type of brick that will be used. There are stores mainly offering different types of bricks. You may opt to get bricks matching the style and scheme of your house. Otherwise, you can purchase bricks that will make your grill stand out from the rest of your property.
  4. Laying the Bricks Start by dry-mixing the mortar. Generally, the mix should be 1 part cement and 3 parts sand. Use building sand as it does not fall apart over time.
  5. Stacking the Bricks – Cover the bottom and one end of the blocks making up the first brick course with mortar. Next, lay the first course of brick on the foundation. The course should be straight for the grill to have a good form. Clean the edges of the first course. Then set the second course, staggering the first block and the next ones. Cover the top portion of the blocks with mortar for the second course. The other side should be covered with cement.
  6. Placing the Grill – Insert a metal pin where you want the grill to be. Finally, put the grill in place. The grill will be better in use if you leave it to set for a long time after the project is completed.
